False dichotomies are traps. They would have you believe that complex problems can be solved if only you would choose a side. But since it takes all kinds of people to make the world go round, we need to learn to cooperate with people who hold different positions from our own. Cooperation, not yelling matches, is how we move forward.
I like a recent post from researcher & author Brene Brown, “Gun Reform: Speaking Truth to Bullshit.” Brown grew up in Texas in a gun owner family. She believes in gun ownership. But she doesn’t support the NRA. While so many people believe that those two things go hand in hand, they don’t have to. It’s a trap.
So don’t fall for it. You can make choices that aren’t on the menu. And if you do, you are probably in a better position to make change.
